Check out this great tutorial for How To Make Cloth Wipes For Cloth Diapering!
These are so simple, inexpensive and easy to make – You never need to buy Baby Wipes ever again!!
This easy cloth diapering tutorial for how to make cloth wipes is a great start to going eco-friendly in your diapering methods – say goodbye to disposable wipes.
Let’s assume you are done with disposable diapers; lot of families start cloth diapering to save money.
Buying them already made is a great way to save some money, but you can save even more by making your own reusable wipes.
If you make your cloth baby wipes from two-ply flannel, you can get about ten to a dozen wipes out of one yard, depending on how big your homemade wipe solution of course.
So for four dollars, you’ve got a good start to your cloth wipe solution.
So for about eight dollars, you’d have enough reusable cloth baby wipes for one baby.
You don’t have to make the reusable baby wipes with all flannel kind of fabric.
You can use flannel on one side and terry cloth or a baby washcloth for the other side.
It does make your homemade baby wipes more expensive, but it’ll usually be less expensive than buying them and you can pick out some colors that you like.
You can pre-wash your fabric before you start cutting out, but I prefer to just cut it out and wash it when it’s done, that way I don’t have to worry about ironing it.
After they’re done, I just wash them once using my regular cloth diaper wash routine to prep them, and then after that, I wash them with the rest.
How To Make Cloth Wipes For Cloth Diapering
This is a super easy way to make your own cloth wipes.
Pick your favorite colors and designs of flannel at your local craft store, or even find flannel fabric pieces online in various fun colors.
Grab some supplies and get started making them!
Supplies:
- fabric – flannel, terry cloth can be cotton or hemp or bamboo
- ruler
- scissors
- thread
- sewing machine or needle
Instructions
Decide how big you want your cloth wipes to be. I make mine about seven inches square finished.
So you’ll want to cut them a little bigger to allow for stitching and turning inside out.
I add on half an inch for seam allowance (meaning I stitch around about a quarter of an inch from the edge).
Seven inch squares is a pretty good size for wipes.
Place two squares together with right sides facing.
Stitch around the edges of your soon to be cloth wipes about a quarter of an inch from the edge, leaving an opening on one side in the middle so you can turn them inside out.
Clip the corners of the wipes so there isn’t a big lump in the corners, being careful not to clip your stitching.
Turn inside out and press using an iron, making sure to fold in the part where you left it open.
Straight Stitch or Zig-zag, for a decorative look, around the edges, backstitching at the beginning and end, and voila!
You’re done.
Just wash and you’re good to go.
Now go look at your empty disposable wipes container for the last time.
These simple and easy homemade cloth diapers are a great choice for your own child, but also an excellent choice for gifting to a friend (soon to be new Mom) who has a baby on the way.
Additionally, if you aren’t planning to cloth diaper, these cloth wipes still come in handy.
They are great for tender baby’s bottom, spit up messes or even use after feeding their first soft foods.
Every baby deserves a soft and gentle cloth cleaning their messes, and this is ideal.

those are super cute! I have had my half started wipe stash sitting next to my sewing machine for months now. My fabric is blue with owls too. Haha.
I wish I had a surger, which would make making cloth wipes easier. We mainly use disposables (that I was with the diapers and reuse as liners) and wash cloths with water. I do have some cloth wipes that I also use as liners.
This makes me wish I had a sewing machine!
do you need to zigzag or serger the raw edge so they don’t fray ? or does the top stitching prevent it from fraying /stitching coming undone ?
How many yards of fabric did you use? How many wipes did you get? I’m trying to figure out how much to buy. 🙂
After you turn them inside out, do you stitch ALL the edges or just the section you left open and turned in the edges? Thanks!!
These wipes are so cute! Luckily I think we are nearing the end of our cloth diapering journey (my little guy is showing interest in the potty!!) But we would have loved these when he was younger!

Making home-made wipes is a great idea. I did too and it really does help you save money, plus you are already doing the wash anyway so it isn’t a big deal. I recently did a cloth diaper post too in case you are interested.
