An accessible bathroom renovation should reduce fall risk and make daily routines easier without creating new hazards. A walk-in tub may help some households, but it is only one option and it needs to be evaluated in the context of the user, room, plumbing, and emergency plan.
Start with the person and the task
Ask which activities are difficult: stepping over the tub edge, standing for a shower, reaching controls, transferring from a mobility device, or getting up from the toilet. An occupational therapist can assess the room and suggest changes matched to the user’s abilities.
Compare bathing options
- A low-threshold or roll-in shower can reduce the need to step over a high edge.
- A walk-in tub provides a door and built-in seat, but the user normally must enter before filling and remain seated while it drains.
- A transfer bench may offer a lower-cost solution when the existing tub and layout are suitable.
- A handheld shower, pressure-balanced controls, and an adjustable-height mount can improve reach and temperature control.
Prioritize proven safety details
Install structural blocking and properly rated grab bars where transfers occur. Use slip-resistant flooring, bright even lighting, reachable controls, and a stable seat designed for wet areas. Towel bars are not substitutes for grab bars. The CDC recommends practical fall-prevention steps for older adults, including reviewing hazards and discussing individual risks with a health-care provider.
Check the building and plumbing work
Confirm drainage, waterproofing, ventilation, hot-water capacity, electrical protection, doorway clearances, and local permits. Use qualified trades for work involving supply lines, drains, wiring, structural changes, or waterproofing.
Plan for emergencies
The door should not trap a fallen person, and a phone or alert device should be reachable. Review how a caregiver or emergency responder would access the room. Test all equipment and practise the routine before the renovation is considered complete.
