Practicing Sight Words & Letter Sounds. Do you have a Pre-K child? Are they learning their letter sounds or if in Kindergarten their sight words?
My son is in Kindergarten and is learning several sight words a week.
This week LIKE is the word they started with today. At home it is important to practice what they learn in the classroom.
They do not get much homework at this age, but they do still need to practice.
Read at last 20 minutes at home and do some Math and Word Sounds and Sight Words practice. I do this with my son and it gets him a sense of ‘homework’ for the years to come.
How can you make a simple at-home game the kids can play together or you can play as a family?
Here is what you need and probably have laying around. If not, it will cost you some popsicle sticks at a craft store.
Heck, you could use slips of colorful or decorative paper to make it just as fun!

The game of BAM!
This is a wonderful game to practice Sight Words & Letter Sounds
What you need
Multiple Popsicle Sticks
Cup or container
Sharpie
Set Up
Depending on what you are practicing.
Can keep different sets separated in baggies. I made 2 games as shown above.
One set has letters and the other set has sight words he knows.
Include about 3-4 sticks that have the word BAM on them.
Stick them word-side down into container or cup so you cannot see the writing
How to Play (2+ Players)
Each player takes turns picking out a popsicle stick without peeking in cup.
For letter sounds the player does not say the letter-they say the letter SOUND and one word that begins with that letter.
If playing sight words, player reads the sight word and makes a sentence using that word.
They get to keep the stick in their pile when done.
If a player pulls a stick that reads ‘BAM’, they have to put all the sticks in their pile back in the cup.
Winner is the one with the most sticks when BAM words are all that is left or can set timer to end the game.
Variations or Ideas
You can practice Money, Math, Time and many other concepts.
Just write on the sticks a series of practice types you choose and bag them up for later when done!
Fun to take to restaurants or on plane trips!

My son is also in Kindergarten and would love a game like this. He gets quickly bored with traditional methods of reviewing and drilling.
We have a sight words app, and I love the game of Bam idea!

This is a great idea. We have a pre-k child as well. His preschool is teaching him a TON of words, but he also loves to practice at home. I think he’d really like this game!
