11 Tips to Help a Picky Eater

Young child exploring food at the table

Selective eating is common, especially in early childhood. The most helpful goal is not to force a child to eat a particular food tonight; it is to build a calm routine in which the child can gradually learn about a wider range of foods.

Eleven practical strategies

  1. Keep a predictable meal and snack rhythm so children arrive hungry but not frantic.
  2. Serve one familiar food alongside the family meal without preparing an entirely separate menu.
  3. Let the adult decide what, when, and where food is offered; let the child decide whether and how much to eat.
  4. Offer very small portions of unfamiliar food so the plate does not feel overwhelming.
  5. Repeat exposure without pressure. Looking, touching, smelling, licking, or tasting can all be steps.
  6. Involve children in washing produce, stirring, setting the table, or choosing between two vegetables.
  7. Model eating the food yourself without turning the child into the focus of the table.
  8. Avoid bribing, shaming, threatening, or requiring a clean plate.
  9. Keep screens and toys away from the table when possible so everyone can notice hunger and fullness.
  10. Describe food neutrally—crunchy, warm, tart, smooth—instead of calling it good, bad, or healthy.
  11. Look at the pattern over a week rather than judging one meal.

When to get professional help

Speak with a health-care provider if your child is losing weight, has pain or choking with eating, eats an extremely narrow range that is shrinking, avoids entire textures, has nutritional deficiencies, or mealtimes cause severe distress. A paediatrician, registered dietitian, feeding therapist, or occupational therapist may be appropriate.

Canada’s Food Guide encourages parents and children to eat together, involve children in food preparation, and act as role models for healthy eating. Those habits matter more than winning a single dinnertime standoff.
