Ingredients: Locally Grown:
- 1 cup organic wheat berries (I used rye)
- 8 cups water
- Oil for frying
- Salt or your choice of seasonings for flavoring
- Popcorn flavors work great and can be found at any grocery store.
- Wheat berries can be found at nearly any health food store or bulk food store.
Directions:
- First, cook the wheat berries to make them soft.
- Place the wheat berries into the water in a large pot on the stove.
- Bring to a boil, then turn the temperature down and simmer for one hour.
- Taste.
- If you feel they need to be softer, cook until the desired tenderness is reached.
- Drain the water from the wheat berries and allow them to drain.
- Next, pour your wheat nuts onto a paper towel or a hand towel and another to dry them thoroughly.
- Pour into a bowl.
- Heat oil on the stove at medium temperature.
- When you place a wheat berry into the pot, it will bubble when ready. Alternatively, you can put the edge of a wooden spoon into the oil, which will also bubble when it is done.
Now The Berries:
- Place the wheat berries into the oil 1/2 cup at a time.
- If your pot is small, use 1/4 cup.
- The wheat berries will cause the oil to bubble up, and you want to be sure you have room for this without the oil spilling over.
- Cook for 4-5 minutes or until the wheat berries are crunchy, like a corn nut or chip.
- Place on paper towel and pat down, place into bowl.
- Finally, add seasoning and mix through your wheat crunch. Enjoy!
- Keep in a sealable container.

Wow, I don’t remember them, but they do look yummy. Do popcorn flavors come in salt and vinegar? I’ve seen popcorn flavors but never bought them.
Hi Jennie!
They do have salt and vinegar popcorn flavorings! You’ll be amazed at the selection. Everything from cheddar, dill pickle, caramel (would be so yummy on these!) and many more 🙂
Why do you recommend organic wheat? We’re wheat growers (conventional) I’m just going to use the stuff we grow 🙂
