How to Help Your Child Choose the Right College

When the time nears to help your child choose the right college or university, this task can be quite challenging for several reasons.

Above all, selecting the right school can play a big role in your child’s future and you want the best for your child.

Handling this situation will depend on if you are financing the cost entirely or partially and if your child has included you in the discussion.

Consider the Expense

University studies are very expensive and how much input you may have will depend largely on if you are paying. If your child has received a scholarship or is financing his or her studies independently by working together with savings or financial aid, your opinion may be limited to just that, an opinion.

If on the other hand, you are contributing significantly to the costs, you’ll have more say in the matter. If student loans are involved, children must comprehend how student loans can affect their financial future, so it’s important to have the money discussion even if you are unable to contribute financially.

If you are paying for university studies, even partially, you will know what you can afford. So, while it may be uncomfortable to discuss monetary limits. It’s vital that you are crystal clear about how much you can contribute and that you cannot give more.

Review together financial aid opportunities and evaluate student loan conditions before signing on the dotted line.

Academic Programs

Consider both private and state colleges as well as community colleges especially if finances are a concern. When choosing, don’t look necessarily at an institution’s overall rating, look at how colleges are rated for the academic program your child wants to major in.

Some colleges may be known for a specific faculty or program. Encourage your child to choose a major that is stimulating so they will be more productive. Don’t insist on what you think may get them a “better” job but that doesn’t interest them.

Time and money will be wasted. Take the time to research academic offerings specifically related to what your child hopes to study and make a career of.

Location and Environment

Will your child be studying close and living at home or will he or she live on campus? Is the school distant such as out of state and is your child comfortable being far away? Selecting the right college should not merely be based on academic offerings but needs to offer a supportive environment for those far from home such as tutoring for those struggling.

Include extracurricular considerations if your child is an athlete or artist or merely shy. Look for opportunities that might include career internships or study abroad.

Do not underestimate your child’s safety on campus. Does the college integrate security features such as enhanced access control to dorms and school buildings, school surveillance camera systems on campus, alarm systems, emergency light boxes, and emergency lockdown procedures should a threat emerge?

Is there somewhere safe for their college student car or their bicycle? Colleges that integrate technological security systems with physical security will most likely offer a more secure environment for study.

Visit the Campus

Often, the best way to get a feel for a campus and how your child might fit in is with a visit. On-site visiting will allow you to explore the campus and surrounding area. Scheduling a campus tour and interacting with school personnel can give a feel for what your child will encounter.

Often websites, reviews, and printed material cannot communicate the atmosphere.  Taking the time and investing in an on-campus visit for your child’s top choices can tip the choice in one direction or another. Your child may observe something that makes a difference.

If you are unable to make a trip, take a virtual tour together with your child. This can give both you and your child a feel for how he or she may fit into campus life.

How to Help Your Child Select the Best Academic Institution

Undoubtedly when it comes time to choose a college or university for your child, you will experience a wealth of mixed emotions. You’ll be proud of your child’s accomplishments, worried for his or her safety and success, grappling with finances, and perhaps struggling with the idea of an empty nest.

Determining which college is right will not be easy, nor should it be. College is a life-changing experience for both you and your child. Take the time to discuss all aspects of college life with your child and listen carefully. Be honest when discussing finances.

Your final goal is to assist in setting your child on his or her path to future success. Some children may blossom later and prefer to begin their college studies while still living at home or by remaining close to home. Others may opt for a leap into the adult world by studying far away. Both are valid options and can prove to be stepping stones to a future profession.

Helping your child make this important decision, even if only by listening, can be an incredible occasion for continued bonding.
