DIY toddler wall art can make a room feel personal without turning the project into a permanent renovation. The safest approach is lightweight, washable, and securely installed outside a child’s reach.
Choose a simple theme
Start with colours or shapes already in the room. A rainbow of paper circles, family-photo grid, fabric banner, or set of painted cardboard animals is easier to update than a complex mural.
Easy project: removable shape gallery
- Cut large shapes from sturdy, acid-free paper or lightweight cardstock.
- Let your toddler add washable paint, crayons, or sponge prints under supervision.
- Write the date discreetly on the back.
- Mount the finished pieces in lightweight frames or on a secured display board.
- Rotate the art as new pieces are made.
Make installation the adult job
Keep cords, strings, heavy frames, glass, sharp fasteners, and small detachable parts away from the crib and play area. Anchor furniture that could tip and follow the manufacturer’s wall-mounting instructions. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends anchoring furniture and televisions to help prevent tip-over injuries.
Design for change
Use a consistent frame size or a single colour palette so new art can drop into the same arrangement. Photograph oversized or three-dimensional crafts and display the print instead. This keeps the memory while reducing clutter and loose parts.
Involve your toddler safely
Offer two paint colours, let them choose a shape, or ask where a finished piece should go while an adult handles installation. The result feels collaborative without asking a toddler to manage tools or wall hardware.
