Macaroni and Cheese with Ham is a comfort food in our family. I make it at least twice a month. The boys love it, and I love that I can tweak it each time to make it a little different.
My children’s favorite extra is adding ham to it and then baking it.
They love the cheesy bits that get cooked on top, and then devour the rest of it.
You could add different veggies, or even a breadcrumb top. It’s a great versatile dinner.
If you are looking for more one dish recipes, why not try one of these?

What you will need:
- 1 box dry macaroni
- 2 tsp. salt
- water
- 4 Tbsp. butter
- 1 medium onion; chopped
- 5 Tbsp. flour
- 2 cups milk
- 3 cups of grated cheese*
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- 2 cups cooked ham; diced
Directions:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Cook macaroni until it’s tender but not overdone.

In a medium sauce pan melt the butter, and add the flour and pepper to make a rue.
Cook on medium heat stirring frequently for 5 minutes.
Careful not to burn.
Slowly add in milk, followed by the cheese.
Whisk slowly until the cheese melts into the milk and rue.
Add onions and ham and cook on low for 5 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
In a large oven safe pot, mix together the macaroni and cheese sauce.
You can top it with extra cheese of you wish.
Bake for 30 minutes until golden and bubbly.
Let sit for 5 minutes and then serve.
Wow! This looks delicious! My family would love this recipe! I have always wanted to try making homemade mac & cheese. Adding the ham… perfect! Thanks for sharing your recipe!
Hi Alisha, my family loves homemade macaroni and cheese and I don’t make it nearly as much as they would like. I don’t think we’ve ever eaten it with ham as an ingredient but I’ll give it a try.
Have a great day!
Love this stuff, but don’t get to eat it as often as I’d like. Course, I have to use Velveeta, which my wife says isn’t real cheese. Don’t care; we like what we like. 🙂
Simple easy meal that everyone likes. I would definitely use low sodium ham in this though as it may get rather salty. Sounds good for dinner tonight.
Hello! Thank you for sharing this recipe! This is coming at a great time… I’m printing it off so I can use it with our leftover ham after Easter. I have a husband and five kids, and this sounds like something all of them will enjoy (which is like a miracle!).
Thanks again! 🙂
I can’t wait to try this recipe out. We are huge mac n’ cheese fans. Thanks for sharing.
One of my favorite “go-to” recipes. Your addition of ham makes it that much better, Great photos, too

Oh yum!!! I need to make this recipe. Its going on my menu right now!
I love mac and cheese. My mothers homemade variety was my favorite growing up. I love it with fresh cooked bacon crumbled on top and then put back in the oven so the cheese gets a little bubbly. Yum.
This looks yummy. I have been putting ham in mac & cheese for years, though I usually just do the lazy way with the box and then spruce it up with extra cheese. I may have to try this and see how much better it is.
We love baked man n cheese at my house too. We like to add steamed broccoli and corn and have it for our meatless meal of the week.
My girls are addicted to mac & cheese, and my husband loves ham, so this would be great for the whole family! Thanks for sharing!
Baked Macaroni and Cheese Is my favorite southern dish. With ham sound good but I do not eat pork. Graphic image clear and I like that. Thanks for sharing

Classic comfort food! Now if I could just get someone to come cook it for me, not that I need it. I know . . . typical male response, right?
I have made this for years! My kids loved it growing up and now my grandkids love it just as much. Great recipe!
Yum! I once made Kraft Mac&Cheese for my kids, but I added broccoli and a breadcrumb topping. The kids were so impressed! They called it “French noodles” and said it was the greatest dish of their lives. Ha!
This looks delicious! My sister has an amazing macaroni and cheese recipe that she always makes but I’ll have to slip her this one and get he to add some cheese! Yumm!
My kiddos will eat mac & cheese every day if I let them. This is a fun twist on it to get something other than cheese in their bellies!
This is my favorite food. I’m starving now. lol.
