Baby and Toddler Sleep Tips
Rebecca from The Sugar Plum Sleep Company will be sharing her best baby and toddler sleep tips with us every month.
Most of all, check out episode one which is all about how your baby or toddler’s room affects their sleep.
Room Conditions
A dark room contributes to a good night time, and in some case, a great day time sleep for your child and for yourself as well. There are a couple of ways to evaluate the room as a good sleep environment. The human body adapts to light levels and releases hormones that either help us stay awake or help us fall asleep. As the light level decreases our body releases melatonin which helps us prepare and maintain a “sleep” state. That is why it is so important to have a dark sleep space so that it promotes the release of melatonin. On a scale of 1 – 10 (10 being the darkest) you want the room to be 8.5 to 9. You don’t want the room to be so dark that it is unsafe. It is especially important during the summer months as there is a lot of daylight hours.
Window Coverings
take a look at your window covers. These are often the weakest point in blocking light. Perhaps add a retractable blind which adds extra light blocking properties.
