Painting stucco can refresh a Calgary home, but a durable result depends on preparation and weather conditions more than colour. Paint should not be used to hide movement cracks, trapped moisture, or failing stucco.
Inspect before choosing paint
Walk the exterior and mark cracks, bulges, staining, chalky areas, loose finish, and gaps around windows or penetrations. Hairline cracks may be repairable; wider or recurring cracks can signal movement or water entry and deserve assessment by a qualified contractor.
Clean gently and let the wall dry
Remove dirt, cobwebs, and loose coating without driving water behind the stucco. Aggressive pressure washing can damage the surface. Follow the coating manufacturer’s drying-time requirements after cleaning or repair.
Use compatible materials
Choose primer, patching materials, and exterior masonry coating that are compatible with the existing stucco and previous finish. Breathability matters: the wall still needs to manage moisture. A paint supplier or experienced stucco contractor can help identify the current coating.
Work within Calgary weather
Apply coatings only within the manufacturer’s temperature and humidity limits, with no rain, frost, or sharp overnight temperature drop expected. Direct sun and strong wind can also make paint dry too quickly. Spring and early fall can offer workable days, but the forecast and wall temperature must guide the schedule.
What changes after painting
A well-prepared finish can unify repairs, update the colour, and improve curb appeal. It cannot correct structural movement or poor drainage. Protect the investment by maintaining gutters, downspouts, grading, flashing, and sealed penetrations so water is directed away from the wall.
