History becomes more meaningful when children can meet the people behind the discoveries, movements, and ideas that changed the world. These famous women in history for kids include scientists, leaders, journalists, activists, and explorers of different eras and backgrounds.
A role model does not have to be perfect. The best history lessons show what a person faced, what choices she made, and how her work affected others. Read one story at a time, follow the source links together, and ask what your child would like to learn next.
How to use these stories with children
Choose a woman whose work connects with your child’s interests, then look for three parts of her story:
- The challenge: What problem, unfair rule, or unanswered question did she face?
- The action: What did she study, build, discover, say, or organize?
- The impact: What changed because she kept going?
For younger children, a drawing or simple timeline can be more memorable than a page of dates. Older children can compare two women, check a primary source, or investigate why some people received recognition much later than they deserved. 1. Harriet Tubman: conductor, nurse, scout, and freedom fighter
Harriet Tubman was born enslaved in Maryland around 1822. She escaped in 1849, but she did not simply stay away. She returned to Maryland many times to guide family members and friends to freedom through the network now known as the Underground Railroad.
During the American Civil War, Tubman also served the Union as a nurse, cook, scout, and spy. The National Park Service explains that she helped lead the Combahee Ferry Raid, which freed more than 700 enslaved people. Later, she supported the campaign for women’s voting rights.

2. Marie Curie: a scientist who changed how we understand matter
Marie Curie studied physics and chemistry at a time when women faced major barriers in higher education and science. Working with Pierre Curie, she investigated a mysterious energy coming from uranium. Their research helped establish the science of radioactivity, and she discovered the elements polonium and radium.
Curie became the first person to receive two Nobel Prizes: the 1903 prize in physics and the 1911 prize in chemistry. During the First World War, she also helped organize mobile X-ray units so doctors could examine injured soldiers closer to the front.

3. Mary Anning: the fossil hunter who helped reveal a prehistoric world
Mary Anning grew up near the fossil-rich cliffs of Lyme Regis in England. Her family had little money, and she received limited formal schooling, but she taught herself about anatomy and geology while finding and preparing fossils.
As a young person, Anning uncovered the skeleton of a large ichthyosaur. She later found the first complete plesiosaur skeleton and the first pterosaur discovered outside Germany. Scientists often studied her specimens without giving her proper credit, yet her discoveries helped people understand extinction and the long history of life on Earth.

4. Ada Lovelace: imagining what a computer could become
Ada Lovelace studied mathematics in nineteenth-century Britain. She worked with inventor Charles Babbage’s plans for the Analytical Engine, a mechanical calculating machine that was never completed in their lifetimes.
In her detailed notes, Lovelace described a step-by-step method for the machine to calculate a sequence of numbers. She also imagined that such a machine might work with symbols and music, not only ordinary arithmetic. That wider idea is one reason she is often described as a visionary of the computer age.

5. Nellie Bly: reporting from inside the story
Elizabeth Jane Cochran wrote under the name Nellie Bly and became a pioneering investigative journalist. To investigate conditions at a New York asylum, she went undercover as a patient and reported what she witnessed. Her work brought public attention to the treatment of people living there.
Bly was also famous for travelling around the world in just over 72 days in 1889 and 1890. She challenged expectations about the stories women could report and how far they could travel on their own assignments.

6. Rosa Parks: a lifelong organizer for civil rights
Rosa Parks is often introduced through one moment: on December 1, 1955, she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Her arrest helped spark the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
That moment was part of a much longer life of activism. Parks had served as secretary of the local NAACP, investigated racial violence, supported voting rights, and worked with other organizers. Understanding that preparation shows children that social change usually comes from many people working over time.

7. Katherine Johnson: the mathematician who helped send astronauts into space
Katherine Johnson loved counting and mathematics from an early age. At NASA, she worked as a “human computer,” calculating flight paths for space missions. Her work helped determine the trajectory for Alan Shepard’s spaceflight.
Before John Glenn’s orbital mission, Glenn asked Johnson to check the new electronic computer’s calculations by hand. She later worked on Apollo missions and other space programs. Her story also shows how Black women made essential contributions while facing segregation and discrimination.

8. Viola Desmond: challenging segregation in Canada
Viola Desmond was a successful Black business owner in Nova Scotia. In 1946, she bought a movie ticket and sat in the main-floor section of a theatre. When staff told her that Black customers had to sit in the balcony, she refused to move.
Desmond was arrested, jailed, and convicted over a one-cent tax difference connected to the ticket. Her effort to challenge the conviction became an early Canadian legal challenge to racial segregation. Today, her portrait appears on Canada’s vertical $10 bank note.

9. Wangari Maathai: planting trees and strengthening communities
Kenyan scientist and activist Wangari Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977. The movement worked with women to plant trees, restore damaged land, and support local livelihoods. Maathai connected environmental protection with democracy, peace, and women’s rights.
In 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. By then, the Green Belt Movement had helped plant more than 30 million trees.

10. Malala Yousafzai: speaking up for every child’s education
Malala Yousafzai grew up in Pakistan’s Swat Valley and spoke publicly about girls’ right to attend school. In 2012, a gunman attacked her on a school bus. She survived and continued advocating for education.
In 2014, at age 17, Yousafzai became the youngest person to receive a Nobel Prize. She shared the Nobel Peace Prize for her work supporting children’s right to education.

Questions that help children think like historians
After reading a profile, try one or two of these open-ended questions:
- What problem did she notice that other people accepted or overlooked?
- What skills did she need to develop?
- Who helped her, and whom did she help?
- What barriers were created by the laws or customs of her time?
- Did she receive credit for her work while she was alive?
- Which source would you check if two accounts disagreed?
- What is one small action inspired by her story that you could take this week?

Keep expanding the list
No list of ten people can represent all of women’s history. Use these stories as doorways, not as the complete record. Look for women from your own community, Indigenous nations, different countries, disability communities, the arts, skilled trades, sports, medicine, technology, and public service.
Whenever possible, use museums, archives, government history programs, universities, and organizations connected to the woman’s work. Ask who created each source, when it was published, and what evidence it includes. That habit helps children discover inspiring people while learning that history is something we investigate—not simply a collection of names to memorize.
