4 Helpful Tips for New Moms Struggling with Information Overload

Becoming a parent for the first time is one of the most rewarding experiences life has to offer. However, it can also be an overwhelming time to navigate with such an abundance of (conflicting) information at our disposal.

How do you know who or what to trust? How can you know if you’re doing what’s best for your child?

Combatting information overload can be challenging, but there are a few tips you need to keep in mind – so that you don’t lose it!

Pick a Few Trusted Sources

First of all, it’s a good idea to make some decisions up front about which resources you trust, and try to stick with them.

You can look to your pediatrician, as well as a few parenting books, a reputable parenting website like Mothers Need, or even a trusted family member. Decide which sources align with your own beliefs and values as a new parent, and try to not let new and conflicting information overrule everything you once believed. It’s okay to change your mind – but if you’re constantly exposing yourself to conflicting messages, it will be hard to make it up in the first place.

Find Tailored Information

Just like everyone you know is different – every baby is different too. And so is every mom, dad, guardian, etc. Your baby’s needs are specific to them, and not all parenting advice will apply to you and your unique situation.

When it comes to things like your baby’s nutrition, schedule, healthcare needs, etc., it’s always a good idea to have information that is tailored to you and your child. This is why it’s always a good idea to get specialized advice from your doctor when it comes to medical questions.

Trust Your Gut

When you become a parent, you’ll realize that you have a certain ‘gut feeling’ about certain issues, and a mother’s intuition is not something to be ignored.

Sometimes, no matter how much research you read or advice you receive, something may just not feel right, and it’s important that you honor your intuition in these cases and do what you feel is right. Ultimately, you know yourself and your child best, and will be able to make the right decision for your family.

Ignore Unsolicited Advice

Something that every mother will face at some point in her lifetime is receiving unsolicited advice on how to parent. This advice might come from your own parents, family members, friends, and even complete strangers.

It can be tough to handle unsolicited parenting advice, especially when it’s coming at you from all angles. However, it’s important that you don’t feel pressured to always take this advice. While those offering it probably mean well, you need to remember that everyone’s circumstances are unique and what worked for one, may not work for you.

Final Thoughts

All in all, as a new mom you need to be open minded and be receptive to learning. However, this doesn’t mean that every piece of advice you read or receive needs to be applied word for word to your life. Take everything with a pinch of salt and ultimately do what you think is right for you and your baby.
