Tips for New Breastfeeding Moms

Congratulations on your new bundle of joy!

There are so many things to consider when it comes to caring for your newborn.

Which car seat is the safest, what kind of crib mattress does the new baby need, should you let your little love sleep on their belly, or their back?

Well when it comes to getting nutrients in your baby, there are only two choices.

Breastfeed, or formula?

The many benefits of breastfeeding make the choice pretty simple, if you are healthy and able to give it a try.

Get a Proper Latch

Breastfeeding can be painful at first, but the most important thing to remember for successful nursing is to ensure that your little one has a proper latch.

An improper latch will lead to a painful experience.

While you are in the hospital take advantage of the lactation consultants, if they are available.

If not, look up your local La Leche League to find your nearest group.

La Leche offers great tips for new breastfeeding moms.

Do not be shy, or feel uncomfortable.

It is the consultant’s job to watch, and teach mothers to feed their babies, all day.

There is not anything that they have not seen.

Make Yourself Comfortable

Take a seat in your favorite chair, grab your Boppy, or a pillow, and prop up your feet.

Newborns are not the most efficient eaters, and can nurse for quite awhile during one session, so make yourself cozy.

Find the proper hold that works for both you and babe, by positioning them differently.

Football hold, cradle, and cross cradle are the most common positions.

Also be sure to bring baby to your breast.

Leaning forward to feed your baby will put unnecessary strain on your back and neck.

Do What Works for You

Because there is no way to tell just how many ounces your baby is drinking while nursing, many moms question whether or not baby is getting enough.

Be sure to check with your baby’s doctor if you have any concerns regarding feeding your baby.

However, supplanting or feeding your baby formula works too!

Do what works for you.
