2014 Organizing Goals in 3 Small Steps

Can you believe 2013 has come to an end? As I look back and reflect on the year and I think what have I accomplished? I did make a goal list of things as 2012 came to an end, let’s just say I failed. I can admit it! I started off 2013 trying to meet as many goals as possible. Doing so, by Spring I lost interest or felt way too overwhelmed to continue.

I have to tweek and learn from my mistakes last year, so this year I can feel I accomplished something all the way. The best way to do that is to break it down into smaller, more attainable goals. One of my goals last year was to organize my home and more important keep it that way.

My 3 small steps to reach my organizing goals:

Getting everyone on board. This is a huge step and may have been overlooked. I think this may have been the downfall of my plans to stay organized last year. I needed to get my husband and kids involved. I decided on focusing on one dumping ground in our home. You know that spot where jackets, shoes, backpacks and other items end up? By working on that one place, the kids would not track it through my house and make the whole house look like a tornado hit.

Everything has a home. By going room by room in my house I made sure everything has a place to go. This will avoid the dreaded junk drawer or pile of items laying around because you or another family member do not know where is goes. When I organized again a few months back I made sure everyone knew where most things went so I could avoid re-organizing one space again.

Clean up as you go from room to room. Every time I leave a room I do a quick scan, if I find something that does not belong Ill grab it and put it in its place. This is such a simple step and takes only a few extra seconds to do. It will save you significant time each night having to pick up in every single room.

Do you have plans for getting more organized in 2014? If you do, what are the steps you are going to implement to get you to your goal?
