Every Dollar Counts: Apply for Scholarships Year-Round

Applying for scholarships is a great way to get extra funds to cover both living and educational expenses so Apply for Scholarships Year-Round.

For example, you’re probably aware of educational scholarships that support students, like scholarships for accounting and finance students.

Other scholarships aren’t academic and award cash prizes based on merit, skill hobby, or passion.

Educational scholarships tend to grant larger awards (sometimes tens of thousands of dollars) since tuition is expensive.

However, smaller scholarships are equally worth pursuing.

Sometimes even $50 can make a huge difference.

When you have kids, every dollar counts, and that’s why you should apply for scholarships year-round.

Scholarships are always available

Unlike other opportunities, there is no “off season” for scholarships.

While each individual scholarship has a set time for submitting applications, you’ll find active opportunities year-round.

Persistence pays off

If you apply for a particular scholarship this year, don’t give up; apply for that scholarship every year you qualify.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t win right away.

Winning scholarships is a numbers game, and you need to apply for more than a few if you’re going to win.

Your persistence will pay off in many ways.

If you don’t win immediately, you might win the next year or two years later.

Winning two years down the road might seem irrelevant, but in two years, you’re still going to need money, right?

The other way persistence pays off is by training you to continually search for new opportunities.

For instance, when you don’t win a scholarship you applied for, you’ll naturally seek new opportunities, which could be yours to win.

There could be five big scholarships out there that you might win, but to apply, you need to know they exist.

Persistence is your ticket to finding those additional opportunities.

Multiple, smaller scholarships add up

Have you passed on applying for scholarships under $1,000 or even under $500?

Don’t be so quick to pass them off.

Small awards are worth pursuing for a few reasons.

First, if you win, that’s free money in your pocket.

If a scholarship award is $100, passing that up is like walking by a $100 bill lying on the sidewalk.

If an award amount is something you’d pick up off the street, it’s worth applying.

Second, most people ignore scholarships with small awards.

That means you’ll have a better chance of winning because there will be less competition.

Last, smaller awards add up.

If you win five different scholarships at $300 each, that’s a total of $1,500.

Think about that money in terms of how long it takes you to work to earn $1,500.

When you win multiple smaller scholarships, it adds up fast and reduces the amount of time you need to work to earn the money.

Where to find scholarship opportunities

If you’re looking for scholarships, you can always perform a search online.

However, there are several key websites that publish aggregate data from multiple sources.

These sites include Scholarships.com and Fastweb, two of the most popular sources for finding scholarships.

On Scholarships.com, you can find all kinds of scholarships organized by type and demographic qualifications.

For instance, there’s an entire section dedicated to scholarships and grants for single moms.

The site is updated to reflect current opportunities, along with a link to the official scholarship website where you can learn more.

Fastweb provides free access to college scholarships and grants, so you’ll need to be in school to qualify for those opportunities.

Another great source for scholarships for single moms is ScholarshipOwl.

In 2020, ScholarshipOwl published a list of 22 opportunities for single moms.

Most of these opportunities are offered each year and are focused on education.

For example, the site lists the Washington State University scholarship that awards $1,000 to single parents of minor children.

Also, remember that by taking the PSAT, you’ll qualify for several additional scholarships.

Don’t give up! Apply for scholarships all year long

Find a batch of scholarships you qualify for, and commit to applying every year until you either win or no longer qualify.

Each year, try to find additional scholarships to increase your chance of winning.

Remember, winning scholarships is a numbers game.

If you don’t win right away, don’t get discouraged.

Keep trying, keep applying, and don’t give up.

If you persist for long enough, your hard work will eventually pay off.
