DIY Bird Feeders

Some animals and birds have a hard time finding food. We were encouraged to help feed the birds, so mid-April we decided to make some DIY bird feeders.

Spring is in the air!

Don’t you just love the sound of spring birds?

It’s one of the many things I love about it warming up and saying Goodbye to winter!

We had a tonne of snow in Nova Scotia this past winter and as of May 1st you can still see it on our property and in the woods.

Some animals and birds were having a hard time finding food.

We were encouraged by local shops and wildlife groups to help feed the birds, so mid-April we decided to make some diy bird feeders.

DIY Bird Feeders

Supplies needed:

  • Bird Seed
  • Peanut Butter
  • Toilet paper rolls AND/OR Pine Cones.
  • Newspaper
  • Child friendly knives
  • Yarn or rope

1: Set up your workstation on newspapers to keep the mess contained.

2: Cut yarn to desired length and attach to toilet paper rolls or pine cones.

3: Paint/Spread the Peanut Butter over the entire paper roll or pine cone.

4: Once covered in peanut butter, place paper roll/pine cone in a pile of bird seed. Cover it with bird seed until you can’t see any open spots. You can roll the toilet paper roll/pine cone around and press down on it to ensure it sticks in.

5: Find a tree to hang it in….then do a few bird calls* (tweet tweet, churp churp etc.)

*Bird calls optional 🙂

It’s fun to keep an eye on the new bird feeders over time to see how they are doing.

Our girls loved watching the birds eat from their own diy bird feeders and can’t wait to do it again.
