DIY Art For Under $5
Even after 3 years this DIY Art For Under $5 project is still one of my favourite pieces.
Sometimes gifts from the heart mean more to your family than gifts you buy at the store.
This is definitely the case with my family and my in-laws.
In 18 months of parenthood, we’ve had a several successful DIY projects involving my daughter and a few epic fails.
Having to ask my wife why my daughter had blue streaks across her chest made for an interesting conversation in the days leading up to Father’s Day last year.
The explanation was simply things didn’t go as planned for the art project when my daughter was only seven months old.
I loved my gift, a small painting, and knowing the story behind it makes it even better.
My favourite project was a similar painting for my mother-in-law’s birthday last summer.
Using a dollar-store canvass and painter’s tape, we stencilled the word love on the board to preserve the white background.
Then we let her start to hand paint outside . Granted the paint went everywhere, it was a great experience and she enjoyed it too.
She ate some paint, wore even more and certainly got some on mommy and daddy too.
The finished product looked amazing and it was certainly a happy birthday for my perpetually turning 22-year-old mother-in-law.
I took photos during the entire project so we were able to show her how the whole thing had gone.
We let the paint drying for about 10 minutes before peeling off the tape and allowing the project to dry.
Including bath time in her outdoor pool, the whole project took little more than 30 minutes to complete.
Total cost was less than $5 and there was enough paint to cover two or three more canvases.

Great idea. :] I may have to try this for our Grammies.
looks like a fun time
LOVE this idea, I bet it looks wonderful on your wall.
My son would totally love this! Doing it!
Homemade art projects are SO FUN!
Another good one: buy a blank canvas at a craft store and hand your kiddo a paint brush (starting about age 2) SO fun to see what they make!
What a fun idea! It would definitely make a great Father’s Day present for both daddy and grandpa. The question is, can mommy handle the mess? 🙂
I did it outside on the grass and put her in the baby pool after. Virtually mess free.
How fun! nice pictures! Great summer fun! My boys would love this!
