Living in a rural area, away from family, it can be difficult to get in ‘proper’ date nights. With no sitter to watch our daughter we cannot go out to restaurants or to the nearest movie theater (which is an hour away). In order to keep our sanity and get some much needed alone time we have mastered the art of the at home date night when you have kids.
Our date nights are not incredible fancy, it involves us on a couch watching a movie. However, I do have a few tips to make sure your date night is a success.

Plan A Perfect At Home Date Night When You Have Kids
Plan Ahead
Pick the night for date night in advance. This allows you to get mentally ready as well builds up some anticipation. You can also make sure laundry etc is all done so you will have nothing distracting you.
Let The Kids Run Around
Date night starts after our daughter goes to bed. To make sure she is really ready for bed I always plan a fun, activities activity for the day of. This can be a trip to the park or even hula hooping. There is nothing worse than a kid who just won’t go to sleep when you are excited for date night.
Have Special Snacks
Without kids you are able to have some special adult only, no kids allowed snacks. For us it is normally a small pint of an expensive ice cream but for you it could be a wine and cheese spread. The sky’s the limit.
Pick The Perfect Movie
We choose a movie on Netflix to watch. There are no commercials and no trips to the store to buy a DVD we will watch once. Our picks range from raunchy comedies to full on action films. Here are some of my suggestions that you can find on Netflix Canada.

These are perfect date night activities to do with kids around. Mine are all grown now but it’s the grandkids hangingout with us on date nights 🙂

If you have not watched Kingsmen I highly recommend that one. We saw it in the theatres (one of the rare few we caught) and then watched it again once it came on Netflix. It’s that good. Completely not kid friendly though.
