I never attempted to make homemade onion rings at home. But after learning to fry foods in my cast iron skillet, I have been on a frying frenzy!
These homemade onions rings are very simple to make, and you can season them up any which way you like. My boys like just a little seasoning salt on them – the husband, likes them spicy.
However you make them, these crunchy homemade onion rings will be a hit!
Homemade Onion Rings
What you will need:
- 2 large yellow onions (its all I had); cut into 1/2 slices
- 1 cup all purpose flour; divided
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. paprika
- 2 tsp. pepper; divided
- 2 – 3 Tbsp. Franks Hot Sauce
- 1 1/2 cups Panko breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp. seasoning salt
- oil for frying
Using a heavy bottom frying pan – like a Cast Iron skillet, head at least 2 cups of canola oil over medium heat.
Set up a dredging station – I used three bowls.
Bowl #1 – add flour and 1 tsp pepper; set aside
Bowl #2 – Combine the other 1/2 cup of flour, buttermilk, egg, baking powder, paprika, salt and pepper and 2 – 3 Tbsp. of Franks Hot Sauce in a bowl and mix well.
Bowl #3 – add Panko breadcrumbs and seasoning salt.
Working in small batches, dredge the cut onion rings in the four, followed by a dip in the liquid batter and then into the Panko breadcrumbs.
Place in hot oil and fry until both sides are golden brown – about 3 minutes.
Drain off oil on and continue until all the onions are done.
Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
[yumprint-recipe id=’91’]These homemade onion ring would be perfect to serve at your next dinner party. Fun finger foods, that take no time at all to make! Trying seasoning them differently – add a little Cajun spice to them, or maybe try adding some garlic and onion salt.
Careful – these little golden O are addicting!
Enjoy!
