Finish Power and Free vs Homemade #finishpowerandfree

I am cheap, frugal — no cheap is probably the best word for it. I hate overpaying for anything and will take the extra time to search for coupons and coupon codes before I buy anything. I even make my own dishwashing detergent because 1) I did not find a commercial detergent I liked and 2) I had a hard time finding ‘good’ coupons for dish washing detergent.

When Finish contacted us asking if I would review its new Finish Power and Free tablets I was excited. I have been using my own homemade dishwashing detergent (a citric acid/washing soda blend) for about a year now and really like it. I wanted to prove to myself that not only am I saving lots of money but my homemade detergent cleans my dishes better than a commercial blend.

The results were not exactly what I expected.

In some ways I still like my homemade detergent but let me tell you, Finish Power and Free is really making me reconsider swapping for good.

Ease of Use

Finish Power and Free tablets are all-in-one. You just pop them into the dishwasher and you are good to go. The hardest part about using the tablets was initially getting into the box to get the tablets. I spend a few good minutes struggling to open the box while kind of keeping it intact. Finally I just ripped the sucker open. My homemade detergent was easy to make but I combined the ingredients together (I was lazy and space is a premium in our kitchen). Combining the ingredients made them bind together and I have to scrape the detergent out using a spoons each time I use it. This takes about a minute. With a toddler a minute can be the difference between a happy-go-lucky kid to a complete terror. I am talking from experience.

Ability to clean

I am not gentle on my dishwasher – at all. I do not rinse the dishes before putting them in as I think that is the dishwashers job. I know, I know ….. The Finish tablets did an A-MAZE-ING job with our dishes. As you can see from the photo below I am showing you a before and after on two different plates (our dishes are mismatched). The dishes are different prints because I honestly could not remember which plate I originally took a photo of. There was one casserole dish that had one speck of pasta still on it – not bad.

The homemade blend can leave a film on the dishes and in the dishwasher. I have to put my dishwasher through a vinegar rinse every now and again to combat it. I have not had a residue issue with Finish Power and Free.

Chemicals and Environmental Responsibility

Finish Power and Free uses less harsh chemical, no chlorine and less fragrance and dyes versus other commercially made detergents. As much as I appreciate the effort Finish is making towards using less harsh chemicals I do need to give the advantage to my homemade detergent. I know every ingredient which goes into the detergent I make. Also, since I buy my ingredients in bulk I save on the extra waste the Finish Power and Free package produces.

Finish Power and Free Tablets cost between 33 cents – 45 cents each without sales or coupons depending on the quantity of tablets in the package. When priced out I spend around 10 cents a load with homemade detergent but since I do need to complete vinegar rinses every few weeks the price of the extra water used really closes the gap.

Final Thoughts

Overall I really like the Finish Power and Free tablets. They do an excellent job cleaning the dishes which is the most important factor. I also gave my mother a few of the tablets and she raves about them. She is a convert and has already bought a box of her own. She has stated (on numerous occasions) “it is the best detergent I have ever used”. I will integrate the Finish Power and Free tablets into my dishing routine. By swapping out vinegar rinses and replacing a load or two with the tablets I will save the cost of the extra water used.

Finish is giving away a free sample right now on their Facebook page. Make sure to grab a sample and try it out for yourself.
