Best Fruits and Vegetables to Plant in Springtime

Some people will wait until summer to start their fruit or vegetable garden because that is when the weather is the warmest on a consistent basis. However, in order to get to enjoy the pickings from the garden, you need to plant certain fruits and veggies in springtime.

Beets- Beet seeds need to be planted in the early part of Spring. In fact, as soon as the ground is ready for planting is when they should be planted.

Broccoli-Broccoli seeds can be planted 4 weeks prior to your area’s last frost date. Ideal daytime broccoli temperatures are between 65 degrees and 80 degrees.

Cabbage- Cabbage plants should be started inside about six weeks prior to your area’s last frost date. You can also wait and plant the seeds directly outside two weeks prior to the last frost date instead.

Carrots- You want to plant carrot seeds in the ground about two weeks prior to your area’s last frost date.

Lettuce- Lettuce can be planted in the Spring as soon as the ground is ready for planting. It is important to note that lettuce doesn’t do well in cold temperatures so be sure to cover them if your area experiences a cold snap.

Onions- Onions can be grown in the Spring as soon as the ground is ready for planting. They can be planted in sets or small bulbs.

Potatoes- As soon as you see green grass, you can start planting your potatoes.

Radishes- You can plant radishes about four weeks prior to your area’s last frost date.

Spinach- It is okay to plant spinach seeds over frozen soil since the seeds will germinate as the ground thaws. If you are transplanting spinach seeds from indoors, this can be done about four weeks prior to your area’s last frost date.

Turnips- You want to plant your turnips about two weeks prior to your area’s last frost date.

Apples- Apple trees can be planted in the Spring in central areas and northern areas.

Blueberries- It is recommended that blueberry bushes be planted in the early part of Spring.

Grapes- Grape vines that are bare-rooted can be planted in the early part of Spring.

Peaches- You want to plant your peach trees the same day that you get them if you can.

Pears- Pears can be planted in the earliest part of Spring as possible.

Strawberries- Plant your strawberries as soon as the soil is ready for planting.
