Apple Turnover Recipe
This is an ancient family secret so please enjoy!
Ingredients:
1 pkg. of puff pastry – found in freezer section of your grocery store(where you find pie shells)
Thaw in fridge for 4 hours or on the counter for 30 mins.
2 lbs. of apples, peeled, cored and cut up into chunks
1/3 cup water
1 tbsp. sugar
One tsp. lemon juice
1 egg and 1 tbsp. water whisked together to make egg wash
Directions:
Place prepared apples, water & sugar into large pot, bring to boil, reduce heat and cook until apples are very tender. (kind of like making apple sauce)
Remove from heat, add lemon juice. Mash, until apples are chunky. Cool. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Sprinkle work surface with flour.
Place puff pastry sheet of floured surface.
Roll puff pastry sheet to a 15 inch square.
Keep sprinkling flour on puff pastry to prevent from sticking to rolling pin and your surface.
Once you made your 15 inch square. Cut pastry into 9 squares.
Place a heaping tbsp. of apple mixture into the center of each puff pastry square.
Use a pastry brush to coat each pastry square edges with egg wash.
Fold one pastry edge over onto the other to make a triangle. Pressing down gently on edges, to seal.
Use a knife to cut slits on the top of each turnover, so steam can escape while baking.
Place each turnover onto a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. I use two cookie sheets.
Refrigerate turnovers for 15 minutes.
Bake at 400 for the first 15 minutes, on the top 1/3 part of your oven.
Reduce heat to 350 and move cookie sheets to bottom 1/3 of your oven and cook for another 10 – 15 minutes, until golden brown.
Remove from oven, cool and serve warm.
